Performance of the UK in the EU broadband market remains high Ofcom reports

Ofcom released today an update to its European Broadband Scoreboard published in December 2014. The report benchmarks the UK’s performance on fixed and mobile broadband against other EU countries.

Comparing the UK to other major European economies (Germany, France, Italy and Spain and the UK are referred to as the EU5), the report indicates that:

  • The UK has the highest level of coverage of Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband (providing speeds in excess of 30Mbps)
  • Take up and usage of fixed-line, mobile and NGA broadband in the UK remain amongst the highest
  • The UK offered on average the cheapest communications services (fixed broadband, fixed voice, mobile phone, mobile broadband and pay-TV), followed closely by Germany. However, the cheapest mobile broadband packages are to be found in Italy
  • Consumers in the UK are provided with a wider choice of fixed-line broadband providers than in other countries. German consumers have a slightly wider choice of mobile broadband providers than UK consumers.

Compared to the rest of the EU, the UK’s performance in relation to broadband coverage, take-up, usage, speed, and consumer choice is equally very high.
