The BSG Research & Metrics Group was established in February 2005.

Working with DTI and Ofcom, BSG set out to develop a new set of metrics to benchmark the development of the UK broadband market beyond 2005. Comparing the UK's position v other international markets was becoming increasingly difficult, as like for like comparisons became harder to make. There was therefore a need to develop a new set of metrics capable of comparing the development of the UK market with other international markets.

Sophisticated Broadband Services
Initially the group focused on advising the DTI and its contractors (Analysys) on developing a new set of broadband metrics for the DTI’s Broadband Market Survey. The goal was to develop a framework of indicators that reflect these new challenges in the next phase of broadband development and provide government with a differentiated view of adoption and utilisation of broadband services among consumers and businesses.

The first of three reports was published in June 2005:

The second report of this study was published in November 2005:

Predicting UK Residential Future Bandwidth Requirements

In Q3 of 2005 the BSG Research & Metrics Group began work on a second project to look at potential future bandwidth requirements by UK households in 2008 and 2012. BSG published a Green Paper in May 2006 (see link below).
