The UK currently has approximately 15.6m broadband connections, covering over 50% of households. It would appear, however, that broadband growth in the UK has reached a turning point.
- The middle two quarters of 2007 showed the lowest number of net additions since 2003, at 330,000 and 550,000 respectively – barely half the previous two quarters.
- This could be the pattern for the future, as the pool of dial-up users ready to be converted to broadband has almost run out; those that remain are increasingly reluctant to make the switch.
- Further, there are less new households connecting to the Internet each month, whether broadband or dial-up
- The result has been a sharp reduction in the rate of growth of both broadband and the number of Internet homes in the UK. The total number of Internet homes barely increased at all in Q2 2007.
