Convergence - understanding the commercial market place PDF Print E-mail

Convergence between the telecoms, IT, consumer electronics, broadcasting and creative content sectors has long been talked about but it is now starting to have a real impact in the UK.

With strengths in many of these converging sectors, this represents a significant opportunity for the UK, but it is also brings huge disruption and uncertainty. Understanding this fast changing environment is essential for strategy and policy development: how can UK plc make the most of the convergence opportunity?

By facilitating a cross-sector dialogue BSG is able to aide understanding of the converging marketplace and inform effective policy making. In particular we aim to engage proactively with the growing number of entrepreneurial mid-tier companies that are driving much of the innovation in this space.

Relevant ‘convergence’ issues include but are not limited to: next generation broadband, software, standards, rights, DRM, social networking, content (production, management, delivery), mobile TV and IPTV, the connected home and devices.

Convergence Conversations

One of the key ways that BSG performs this ‘knowledge transfer’ role, is via ‘Convergence Conversations’: informal, round-table events which take place once a month after work and which allow participants to debate a series of convergence hot-topics, and to network.

The Conversations take place in partnership with Intellect, and has recently moved to its new home at www.convergenceconversation.com. Reviews of previous Conversations, as well as the schedule for upcoming sessions can be accessed using the links below.

Convergence Think Tank

In September 2007 then Secretary of State James Purnell announced the creation of the government's Convergence Think Tank (CTT). The CTT has been set up to examine the implications of technological development for the media and communications industries, and the consequences for both markets and consumers.

The work of the CTT is ongoing, and the BSG will provide inputs where appropriate. For more information regarding the work of the CTT please visit the CTT website.
