The convergence of broadcasting, telecoms and technology means that, as consumers, we are no longer passive recipients of content and information – we access content when we want to and on multiple devices. We interact with it, share it with our friends, and even create and distribute content ourselves.
Commercial developments, underway and anticipated in the market are likely to make more services available across more platforms, changing the user experience and interaction even further.
Consequently, the traditional ways of regulating the media are being severely challenged and this has become a natural focus for policy makers in the UK, Europe and beyond.
As a neutral body and with members, across the broadband value chain, the BSG follows this policy agenda with interest and closely tracks how policy developments in this space impact and overlap.
In February 2008, we launched the Good Practice Principles on Audiovisual Content Information, endorsed by leading industry players. These principles give a commitment to provide information about content over a range of media platforms, in a way that is easy to understand. The Media Regulation Working Group within the BSG, published a review of these principles in March 2009.
The BSG played a key role in facilitating the development of the principles that aim to empower consumers to make safe and informed choices about the content that they and their families consume in a fast-moving media age.
The launch of these principles stem from the work BSG led in influencing the development of the Audiovisual Services Media Directive.
