Ofcom’s Plan of Work for 2021/22

Following consultation in December, Ofcom has published its final Plan of Work for 2021/22, outlining its priorities for the next financial year. As part of Ofcom’s preparations for taking on new online safety responsibilities, Ofcom will open a new digital and technology hub in Manchester in summer 2021.

  1. Investment in strong, secure networks – supporting ongoing investment in faster broadband and better quality mobile networks, working with industry to ensure the UK’s communications networks remain safe, secure and resilient.
  2. A review of the mobile sector that underpins future regulation and supports the delivery of high-quality connectivity and innovation to meet people’s needs in the future. Ofcom will assess how the market operates and how it is likely to evolve over the next 5-10 years.
  3. Getting everyone connected – working to ensure people and businesses can access key communications services, including in the hardest to reach locations, monitoring the delivery of the universal broadband service and the Shared Rural Network.
  4. Fairness for customers – continuing to ensure broadband, phone and TV customers can shop around with confidence, switch easily and are treated fairly (especially vulnerable customers).
  5. Supporting and developing UK broadcasting and helping them to meet the changing needs of viewers and listeners, including reporting on the BBC’s performance.
  6. Preparing to regulate online harms – regulation of UK-established video-sharing platforms under the new regime.
  7. Strengthening Ofcom for the future – evolve skills, develop innovative working practices and build a diverse workforce that reflects the whole of the UK.
  8. Develop new partnerships and build on existing domestic and international partnerships with regulators, academia, governments, industry and organisations.
